“Beauty isn’t just about aesthetics, beauty is a thought process, a function, and a way of life.” If anything sums up the ever-talented Mia Lake, it’s those words she lives by. Every designer has their process, fine-tuned over many years in their respective field. At Mia Lake Interiors, that process revolves around the cohesion between beautiful objects and functional, logical design.

From a young age, Mia was always drawn to creativity. “Thinking outside the box was more interesting and all forms of design just felt natural to me,” she says. It’s this perspective that has helped her curate products that are as versatile as they are visually stunning to look at and use.

Above all, her first priority is always function, and it’s the reason she has built up such a solid reputation in the Australian interior design community over the years. “If something functions well and has the opportunity to look good too, it is beautiful. And if something is beautiful and functioning, that in itself is high end design,” says Mia.

One of her many standout qualities is her ability to create unusual, aesthetically pleasing products within what she likes to call ‘design limitations’ – good design comes down to finding out all the facts about a space, a client, a material, understanding its parameters, specifications, and restrictions all before she even begins executing a design. This is holistic design at its best, and this complete view gives her a strong outlook on what the project will entail, whether that be about a budget, a client’s wish list, or even what a site has to offer.

One would describe Mia’s design style and approach as free, fluid, and tailored to the end user. “We follow a systematic process while leaving space to delve deep, getting lost in creativity to produce unique approaches to each design. Our goal is to meet our client’s brief, reflect their style and personality whilst exceeding expectations,” she adds.

And what’s the first step in this process? “Imagining myself walking through the space and looking for places to store items, places where I would sit with family and friends, where I would get ready in the mornings and where I would relax at night. Every aspect of the usability of a space needs to be considered in this very early stage of design.”

With brands that Mia Lake Interiors work with, it all comes down to reputation, quality, experience, and customer service. “It’s all very well and good to look at pretty, shiny objects, but unless I know the reputation behind the brand, this doesn’t hold any value. I need confidence in a product to ensure they are suitable for our clients,” she says.

Brands that become favourites of the Mia Lake Interiors name do so because the experience with them brings about confidence and trust. This is exactly what she aims to do with her own brand, citing that collaboration and clarity is key to achieving a quality final result when working with clients and other designers. And that’s all in a day’s work at Mia Lake Interiors.
